Ocean carriers are pulling capacity out of the transpacific ahead of China's Golden Week, and the squeeze is already showing up in rates. Drewry's World Container Index on September 17, 2026 put Shanghai to Los Angeles at $7,712 per 40ft container, up 5 percent in a single week, with nine blank sailings announced for the following week and further increases expected.

What a blank sailing is, and why it costs you
A blank sailing is a scheduled departure the carrier cancels outright. Carriers blank sailings to protect rates when demand softens, and to manage vessels around holidays when factories stop producing.
The cargo booked on a cancelled sailing does not disappear. It shifts to the next vessel, which was already full, so somebody gets rolled. Three things follow. Equipment gets scarce at origin because boxes are not cycling back. Remaining sailings fill, so the cheapest bookings get bumped first. And rates firm, because space becomes the scarce thing rather than price.
A booking confirmation is not a container on the water. Until your box is gated in and loaded, it can roll.
Why capacity tightens before Golden Week
Chinese factories close from October 1 for the National Day holiday, and many stay quiet well past the official week. That creates a rush before the holiday as shippers race to gate in finished cargo, then a hole during it, then a second rush when production restarts.
Carriers plan vessel capacity around that hole. The blank sailings land in the weeks when they expect volume to drop, which means the sailings on either side of the holiday are the most contested departures of the quarter.
How to tell if your booking is at risk
Watch for these signs. Your cargo ready date is inside a week of the vessel cutoff. Your rate was quoted on a shipping window ending September 30. Your booking is on a transshipment service rather than a direct sailing, which adds a second chance to be rolled. Or your forwarder has confirmed a rate but not equipment.
What to do this week
Confirm the cargo ready date with your supplier directly, not through the sales contact. Factories routinely promise dates they cannot hit before a holiday.
Book ahead of the cutoff even when the ready date is tight, since earlier bookings hold better as vessels fill.
Stay flexible on discharge port. Long Beach, Seattle and Tacoma often have room when Los Angeles does not, and the inland cost difference is usually smaller than a week of delay.
Do not chase the lowest rate into a rolled booking. The cheapest number on a full vessel is the first one bumped.
Check your destination free time. Four working days is common right now, and post-holiday arrival bunching eats it quickly.
Plan for the post-holiday surge. If cargo is not ready this month, assume the first sailings after the holiday are contested and price accordingly.
