FOB vs DDP Why Taking Control of Freight Can Save You Money

By Gateway Lines | October 21, 2026 Before accepting your supplier's delivered price, find out what arranging the freight separately would cost. A single price can make an overseas purchase easier to manage, but it can also make it harder to see how much you are paying for the product and how much you are paying to move it.

For U.S. importers who want more control over their shipping budget, buying on FOB terms, where appropriate, creates an opportunity to compare freight independently. Gateway Lines can help you review the services, charges and delivery requirements behind that comparison.

What DDP includes

DDP means Delivered Duty Paid. Under Incoterms 2020, the seller arranges and pays for transportation to the named destination, handles export and import clearance, and pays applicable import duties and taxes. The seller bears transport risk until the goods reach the agreed delivery point, cleared for import and ready for unloading. Unloading generally remains the buyer's responsibility. [1]

With DDP, your supplier handles the freight arrangements, usually through logistics providers. You pay for that service through the commercial price you agree with the supplier. DDP can be convenient, particularly when you want the seller to manage delivery.

What changes under FOB

FOB means Free On Board. You arrange the main ocean carriage. Your supplier handles export clearance and delivers the goods on board the vessel you nominate at the named origin port. Risk then transfers to you, and you take responsibility for onward transport, import clearance and applicable import charges. [2]

For containerized cargo handed to a carrier at a terminal before vessel loading, FCA, or Free Carrier, is often the more suitable term. It also allows you to arrange the main freight. The contract should identify the actual handover point clearly. The cost comparison below applies to buyer-arranged freight under either FOB or FCA. [3]

Where greater freight control can save money

Compare the shipping cost separately

A supplier's DDP price may include a logistics margin or an allowance for the work and risk involved in managing delivery. That can be legitimate compensation, but a bundled price makes it harder to judge what the shipping service is worth.

Ask for a separate FOB or FCA product quote and compare it with a complete freight proposal. This gives you a way to check whether the supplier's delivered offer is competitive. Any saving must be demonstrated by the actual quotations; it should never be assumed simply because one quote says FOB.

Choose rates and service together

When you select your own forwarder, you can ask how different routes, transit times and delivery arrangements affect the price. You can decide whether an earlier arrival justifies a higher rate or whether a different sailing better fits your inventory plan.

The lowest ocean rate alone may not produce the lowest delivered cost. Compare the destination charges, handling requirements and final delivery alongside the freight rate.

Review how your orders are shipped

If you buy from several suppliers, ask whether compatible orders can travel together. Gateway can assess consolidation and compare shared container space with a full container when the shipment size makes both worth considering. Collection, storage, handling and timing must be included in that assessment. [5]

This gives you another way to improve the shipping plan. Combining orders may help, but it only makes financial sense when the complete cost and schedule work for your business.

Work directly with your freight team

Choosing Gateway gives you a direct point of contact for the services in your shipment plan. You can review the booking, discuss delivery requirements and access shipment updates, documents and billing through Gateway Terminal. That visibility can help you make decisions without depending entirely on your supplier to pass along shipping information. [4]

Compare the complete landed cost

A lower FOB product price is not proof of savings. A DDP price covers more obligations, so the comparison must add the costs you will pay separately under FOB or FCA.

Use the same goods, quantity, cargo ready date, delivery address and service requirements. Check quote validity, currency and payment terms as well.

Cost to compare

What to include or confirm

Product and origin costs

The FOB or FCA product price, the named handover point and any origin services you must pay for. Avoid counting seller-paid services twice.

Main freight

Ocean freight, quoted surcharges and any other transport included in the proposed route.

Import and customs costs

Applicable duties, taxes, government fees, customs brokerage, required filings and bond costs.

Destination and delivery

Terminal or warehouse handling, drayage or other inland transport, and the services required at your delivery address.

Insurance and service fees

Any selected cargo insurance, Gateway's quoted fee and other applicable service charges.

Exclusions and variable charges

Potential inspection, storage, demurrage, detention, waiting or redelivery charges; confirm assumptions and who bears them.

Add the FOB or FCA product price to all buyer-paid shipping, import and delivery costs. Compare that total with the DDP offer for the same scope. Review the workload and risk each option leaves with you.

Changing shipping terms does not, by itself, change the tariff rate that applies to your goods. The opportunity is to improve the actual sourcing and logistics arrangement. Incoterms allocate responsibilities, costs and risk; they do not set tariff rates. [6]

How Gateway helps you compare

Send Gateway Lines the supplier's proposed terms, cargo details, ready date and delivery location. We can prepare a proposal for the services you need, with the included charges and exclusions identified. Our Gateway fee is stated separately so you can see that charge when reviewing the shipment. [4, 5]

Depending on the agreed scope, Gateway can coordinate the ocean booking, supplier handoff and U.S. inland delivery. Customs entries are filed by licensed U.S. customs broker partners, with Gateway coordinating that part of the move. [4, 7]

Buying FOB or FCA still gives you additional responsibilities. Confirm the handover point, insurance arrangements and importer of record before booking. Neither FOB nor DDP automatically requires a cargo insurance policy, so insurance should be discussed explicitly. [1, 2]

Compare before your next order

DDP can be the right choice when the supplier offers competitive delivered pricing and a service arrangement that suits your business. FOB or FCA gives you a separate opportunity to buy and manage freight. The better option is the one that delivers the right combination of cost, service and responsibility.

Ask your supplier for both a DDP price to your delivery address and an FOB or FCA price at the appropriate origin point. Specify the named place or port and Incoterms 2020 in the agreement. Then send the quotations to Gateway Lines with your packing details and ready date. [6]

Before you commit to a delivered price, get a clear comparison of what the shipment would cost with Gateway.
